Canada Sees Hope for 16-Year Extension of USMCA After Washington Talks

(MENAFN) Canada remains confident about securing a long-term extension of the North American trade agreement, with Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc expressing optimism following discussions with senior US trade officials in Washington.

Speaking after meetings with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and other officials, LeBlanc described the talks as constructive and said both sides reviewed developments achieved in recent weeks on a range of trade-related matters.

"We had a positive meeting with Ambassador Greer, Janice Charette, and I and a number of senior officials from the US Trade Representative's office," he said.

According to reports, the discussions focused on technical trade issues and areas where progress has been made through ongoing engagement between the two countries.

Referring to Canada's proposals during the talks, LeBlanc said the government had put forward ideas intended to strengthen the broader North American economy while addressing concerns that Washington has raised over time.

Noting that they had addressed the progress made "over the last number of weeks on a series of technical issues," LeBlanc added that the Canadian side "presented a number of specific proposals to Ambassador Greer that we think are good in the broader context of the North American economy and respond to some longstanding issues that the United States has raised with us."

The minister also confirmed that he discussed correspondence recently sent to US and Mexican officials regarding the future of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

"I also had the opportunity to discuss with Ambassador Greer the letter that I sent to my American and Mexican counterparts yesterday, where I confirmed, as you know, that Canada would be ready to extend the CUSMA agreement by 16 years," he said.

According to reports, Ottawa views the proposed extension as a way to provide long-term certainty for businesses and reinforce economic cooperation across North America.
